2010 BMTT Conference, April 9-10, Free Admission
The 10th annual Black Man's Think Tank Conference is set for Friday and Saturday, April 9-10 at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, OH. This year's theme is entitled Rebuilding Self. The conference is sponsored by Sinclair Community College, Wilberforce University, and the Black Man's Think Tank (BMTT). The conference has forums that discuss issues of importance to Black communities especially as they pertain to Black men and boys. Each year the conference includes a full day of interactive workshops, panel discussions, lectures, health screenings, vendors, food, and entertainment.
This year the conference will address strategies and programs that educate, inform, inspire, and direct individuals to rebuild themselves mentally, physically, behaviorally, financially, and spiritually.
This year's keynote speaker is Tommie Lewis, President, Make It Plain Consulting, of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Tommie's address will explore the following questions: Is it possible to be a successful African American leader at the tender age of 19? Is it sufficient enough to assume age-maturity, community status and professional titles equate to leadership competence? Obviously, many of the most intelligent African American leaders in our day did not know, expect or plan for the emotional, cultural and behavioral impact that the global and national economic conditions would present to the Black community and its leadership. These challenges require new, universal and results-driven solutions. They require rebuilding the Black man.
Tommie will speak Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., and he will conduct a workshop from 10:25 p.m. until 11:40 p.m. entitled, Challenges Facing African American Leadership: Direction, Accountability, and Effectiveness.
Also, participating in this year's Saturday conference will be world renowned Mutabaruka, formerly Allen Pope, who will be visiting us from Jamaica. Many of us know him from Russell Simmon's TV program Def Poetry Jam. See the video of Muta performing Dis Poem.
He will conduct an interactive workshop entitled Reasoning with Mutabaruka. Jamaica's revolutionary poet, whose fiery voice and caustic lyrics expose the havoc of 500 years of European colonization, critiques Western ideology and discusses contemporary issues with his own brand of wit and postmodern critique.
The theme for last year's conference was entitled Best of Both Worlds: Educational Success and Economic Progress. Some of the workshop topics were as follows: Toward an Ideal Public Educational System, Hip Hop Nation USA: State of the Union Address, Navigating the Academic and Legal Minefields to Educational Success and Economic Progress, and Economic and Cultural Relations within Black Families to name a few.
